Chromatography Lab, Day 2

September 30, 2009

Today we took measurements and calculated Rf for our pigments. Lab books were turned back in at the end of class.

Reminder! There is a WebAssign up that’s due next Tuesday! You can do questions 4, 5,  and 8 now based on what we have covered in class so far. The remainder of the assignment will be based on what we discuss over the next few days.

Unit 2 test on Wednesday 10/7!

Chromatography Lab

September 29, 2009

Did a paper chromatography lab with common food colorings – although some teams got fun neon colors! Today we performed the experiment and left the strips to dry overnight; tomorrow we will take measurements and complete the lab analysis. The lab will be due at the end of the period tomorrow.

States and Separation

September 28, 2009

Finished up our matter discussion by defining the term “molecule” and comparing/contrasting it with the terms “element” and “compound”.

Discussed the common states of matter we will be working with this year (solid, liquid, gas), as well as briefly touching on states of matter we will not be working with (plasma, Bose-Einstein condensate). By the way, for those of you who are curious about it, here’s a link to an introduction to the Bose-Einstein Condensate.

We also discussed some common techniques for separating mixtures, the types of mixtures they work for, and the physical properties of the mixtures they depend on. One of these techniques, chromatography, will be our lab for tomorrow.

Factor-Label Quiz

September 22, 2009

Showed solution to tricky problem #6 (click image to see more clearly): density

Took quiz on factor label method and discussed our Unit 1 Lab Practical, which we will be doing tomorrow and Thursday.

HOMEWORK: Have procedure completed and first part of lab written (Name/Title/Purpose/Procedure) when you walk into class tomorrow. You will have 10 min. of lab time, and order will be randomly chosen.

If you go in the first half of the class, you turn in your report (on a loose sheet of graph paper or typed) at the end of class. If you go the second half of class, you turn it in first thing the next day. Since you should have the first part of your lab report done when you get here tomorrow, all you’ll have left to do after your lab part is calcs and a conclusion, which shouldn’t take too long.

How Big is a Molecule Part Deux

September 17, 2009

Worked on Molecule lab calculations in class today – whatever didn’t get completed is due tomorrow!

Tips to remember:

  • Be sure to note what kind of graduated cylinder you used, we have 2 different kinds and they have different precision!
  • Use your scientific notation function on your calculator (EE or EXP button)…or you’ll end up with the wrong answers!

REMINDER! Formal lab report for Aluminum Foil lab due tomorrow!

How Big is a Molecule?

September 16, 2009

Today we did the “How Big is a Molecule” lab. We will have time to work on calculations in class tomorrow; whatever isn’t completed will be due Friday.

**Don’t forget! FORMAL typed lab report for Aluminum Foil lab due Friday as well!!

Welcome to Chemblog!

September 15, 2009

OK! We are going to give this a shot. This blog will be a source for our daily activities in class, as well as a place for me to put some links to useful websites for practice and more information on various topics. If you miss class, you can come here and find out what you missed. I may put some notes here as well, but that depends on storage room….since I’m doing this for free and don’t want to pay for extra space. :)
