States and Separation

September 28, 2009

Finished up our matter discussion by defining the term “molecule” and comparing/contrasting it with the terms “element” and “compound”.

Discussed the common states of matter we will be working with this year (solid, liquid, gas), as well as briefly touching on states of matter we will not be working with (plasma, Bose-Einstein condensate). By the way, for those of you who are curious about it, here’s a link to an introduction to the Bose-Einstein Condensate.

We also discussed some common techniques for separating mixtures, the types of mixtures they work for, and the physical properties of the mixtures they depend on. One of these techniques, chromatography, will be our lab for tomorrow.
